To get around there are many options. you are adviced to bring your driving lisence with you because you can rent a smal car called kencil at the price of 50 RM per day ( some times 40 RM at low season) and the petrol is quite reasonable. with 50 MR you may have enough petrol to go round the island for 3 days so dont hurry becuase after you filled the car you can’t empty the petrol so I suggest you to fill each time few liters and gas stations are every where around the island and they are clearly shown on the free maps that you can obtain at jetty or at the airport ( don’t forget to get one).

you may also like to rent a bicycle for shorter distances or a motor cyclet.that is also fun and that’s also cheaper but maybe not suitable for a family or if you don’t have the lisence or experince.The taxi is expensive and you have to pay from 20 to 30 Rm each journey so at the end renting the car is two times cheaper than taking a taxi. you can rent the car from the airport or from the jetty and keep it until you return but include in the contract that for how long exactly you need it otherwise you will get fined.

the best places to visit in langkawi are : cable car, corocodile farm, mahsuri tomb , laman padi, geopark, jetty and eagle statue, the beaches, underwaterworld and shopping malls. the cheapest shopping mall is at the beach and jetty is slightly more expensive. you may also buy your food at a big shopping mall near the town( the only shopping mall in the town) because food is cheaper there.

If you are malaysian or student you may get a discount to visit the places so dont forget to take your IC card/ student card with you and insist on getting the student discount.

transportation:
If you have enough time to plan for your trip maybe the best way is to book a cheap flight from either KL ( Air Asia) or Penang ( firefly) .there are also flights from sigapore directly to Langkawi( silk Air) you always try to avoid school holidays in Malaysia and also chinese new year because at those occasions the hotels and motels may not be available and also the transportation will be difficult.so if no other option always keep in mind to go on a weekday ( not a holiday or weekend) and try to plan in advance.
the ferri ticket is 115 Rm two way and 65 rm return,from Penang.An alternative is to take a bus from KL or singapore or thailand to kualah kedah and then take a boat to langkawi.
the journey from penang takes about 2.5 hours and you may enjoy your self on the deck.try to take some water and your sunglasses and sunscreen with you because some times the sun can burn you so bad.

the boat ride from kualah kedah or kuala perlis takes about 1:15 to 1:45 hours.

You also can go to langkawi by train ,taking the train to Alor star ( from KL) and Arau.then take  a taxi to Kualah kedah and then take a boat.( long way isn’t it) .
the best way I can advice is to go to langkawi via penang on a boat( ferri) that leaves every morning 8 and 8:15 and returns 2:30 and 5 : 15 Pm to Penang daily.
