postheadericon Anaheim Job Guide: The Best Careers in Anaheim, Ca

Anaheim is one of the largest and most important cities in Orange County in the state of California. With a population of almost 350,000 residents, Anaheim is the 10th largest city in the state. In recent years, the city has experienced great growth both in population and in terms of economic development. The area known as the “Platinum Triangle” has been under rapidly increasing development, which helps to play a role in the city’s growth. Anaheim is perhaps best known for being the home of Disneyland, one of the world’s most visited theme parks.

Historically, Anaheim had been a major industrial town. Canned fruit, electronics and airplane parts were once its biggest export. Production still plays a major role in the city, though today Anaheim has earned itself a diverse economy full of advanced employment opportunities. Today, tourism is one of the city’s most important economic influences, bringing all kinds of business opportunities. In addition to Disneyland, the city is also home to the Anaheim Convention Center, which hosts numerous business conventions every year.

Anaheim is home to both the largest industrial district and the largest business park in the entire county.  The Anaheim Canyon alone houses roughly 2,600 businesses which employ a total of more than 50,000 workers in a variety of industries. Professional and business services, financial activities, and healthcare are among the city’s largest industries. CKE, the parent company of Carl’s Jr., Hardee’s and Green Burrito among others, is located in Anaheim. Much like other cities in California, Anaheim also has a booming tech industry employing thousands of workers. Linksys, Toshiba America and Gateway are just a few of the major tech companies with a presence in Anaheim.

With the many bustling companies located in Anaheim’s many business and industrial parks, one would do well to look for opportunities in the fields most important to these sectors. Sales representatives, for example, are among the most sought after employees in the city. In total, there is a combined total of more than 30,000 residents employed as salespeople in Anaheim. General wholesale salesmen are by far the most popular, occupying about 22,000 members of the workforce. These salesmen earn an average salary of about ,000 a year, with salaries for experienced and driven salesmen reaching as high as 2,000 annually. Scientific and technical salesmen are much less common, but they are highly paid for the complex nature of their work. These salesmen earn, on average, about ,000 a year. Talented salespeople can expect to earn an annual salary of up to 1,000.

Accountants and auditors are another essential piece of the corporate puzzle. Anaheim’s large business community has thusly turned accountant into the third most popular career in the entire city. There are almost 14,000 men and women employed as either accountants or auditors at the city’s many prominent companies, and they are well paid for their essential work. On average, an accountant in Anaheim earns ,000 a year with salaries for educated and established workers reaching up to 6,000. This field shows promising signs of growth nationwide, making it a great fit for anyone looking to explore a new career.

Management analyst is another growing field essential to the nation’s business community, as well as in Anaheim in particular. There are almost 9,000 of them working in the city today, making it the seventh most popular career choice among the city’s educated professionals. This career presents a unique opportunity for people looking for a promising career that affords a certain level of flexibility and freedom. In fact, 27% of the nation’s management analysts are self-employed, contracting with different companies for a period of time instead of being tied down to one place. A management analyst’s main responsibilities are company reorganization, streamlining operations and raising profits. In Anaheim, these employees earn an average salary of almost ,000 a year with salaries going upwards of 4,000 annually.

The Untamed Quest Guide for Levels 1-19 was originally scheduled to be posted on my blog. Do to space constraints, it has been moved here, I do hope that you find it helpful. I believe them to be 100% accurate, if you find any issues with any of them, please let me know I and I will check it out. Also, this Untamed Quest Guide is for PERFECT WORLD INTERNATIONAL. Not any other version, I am not sure if it will be useful for users who run alternate versions of the game. No promises there!

When you initially start Perfect world for the first time as a Untamed, whether that is as a Barbarian or a Venomancer, you start at the Northern Pass. Here is where you will get your first quests. Remember for you first timers, quests are extremely important for you at lower levels, if you want to level quickly. I mean, they are always important, but I so often see people who want to just run around and kill things and wonder why they cannot level quicker. It’s cause your not doing your quests!!! Do your Quests!!.

This job is by no means age specific and so guides range from students to retirees. It sometimes takes a while to discover the vast extent of the ‘hidden’ tour guide market but with a little investigation and an organized marketing plan, the determined job hunter is sure to find the tour niche that best suits her/his schedule and personality. Often one part time tour job leads to another and your roster can be full of a few different types of tour jobs. Following are just a few markets that you may want to look into to get your started. This list is far from exhaustive and of course, depends on the sights and local attractions in your area.

Self Employed Tour Guide- Being a self employed tour guide gives you the freedom to work for different companies, often doing many different types of tours. Many companies only hire guides using this option and you are subcontracted. You are responsible for filing your own taxes and keeping track of write-offs. Companies that hire step-on guides for 3 day or longer charter bus tours often hire on this premise. In my experience, these jobs tend to pay well and bus tour groups generally follow a ‘tipping’ protocol which can be quite substantial. As with any business, there can be drawbacks as well. Contracts may not always be steady and it takes a while to build up your portfolio and fill in your annual calendar. Also, in Canada, self employed contractors cannot receive regular unemployment benefits to keep them in the winter months, when the often seasonal tour business all but dries up. Recently, they have been extended the option to pay into the insurance program for sick benefits and maternity/paternity benefits. So, often times you will need to have other work options ready for the winter months. However, with proper networking and marketing, it is possible to find work by doing private tours or specialty tours.

Tour Guide/Shuttle Bus Driver- Many guides are employed by companies that also require the guide to drive a shuttle bus. Often hotels have their own guide service in place and they use this option. These tours are usually day tours so you will cover less area and will have a different group each day and sometimes a few times a day. Again, tipping can be quite generous and does add up to a substantial portion of your income. This option is attractive, as you can find steady work and benefits may be offered. One drawback is that you will require a special license and depending on where you’re from, the fee can be a hefty one in starting up. This also requires you to multi-task as you will be driving and talking so you have to feel comfortable doing both at the same time. These jobs, too, can peter down on the off season but once you get the necessary license, you can use it to fill up your year with bus driving or other driving jobs.

Historical Attraction Tour Guides- Most cities have museums and other historical buildings that provide steady guiding opportunities. These jobs may or may not provide the best tips but they are often year round and therefore you have the security that comes with steady employment. They are also self contained and require less walking and less ‘timing’ issues with tourists leaving the tour group at various attraction to shop and explore. You are also usually trained on-site and provided with a spiel, therefore requiring less personal research. Tours are generally shorter, and so you will probably be hosting multiple groups throughout the course of the day. If you like the idea of staying indoors, then this option is a good one to explore.

Walking Tours- Many cities offer a wide variety of walking tours in various ‘districts’ within the city limits. An average walking tour lasts about 2 hours, which seems to be just enough time to take in the area of exploration without tiring everyone out. This is a great way to soak up the fresh air while getting some exercise and I have enjoyed all the walking tours I have done. They may or may not provide tips. This often has a lot to do with the company mentioning on their web site or brochures that gratuities are accepted and appreciated. Whether it be the arts district or entertainment district, people love the opportunity to explore by foot and photographers appreciate the chance to snap pictures of whatever strikes them as opposed to trying to catch shots out of the window of a bus. You will need a strong and clear voice if you plan to guide walking tours. Also, a sign or umbrella to hold up is a good idea so that members of your group can easily find the group again if they leave to use the restrooms or to purchase something from a shop along the way. Weather can make your tour schedule less predictable than others, as most people shy away from these types of tours in the inclement weather.

Bicycle Tours- Many bicycle rental establishments also offer the option of local bicycle tours. This is a great gig if you love the outdoors and are in the physical shape required to not leave your body aching. Sometimes, these tours can cover rough or uphill terrain and so it makes sense that if you are going to be delivering fluid spiels, you should make sure that you won’t ‘wind’ easily. These tours tend to be quite relaxed and often offer a stop along the way where a picnic lunch is provided. They also give you the opportunity to explore routes that both bus and walking tours don’t cover. You will have to establish safety rules for your group and make sure that they are strictly adhered to. Often, bicycle tourists are not novices and the whole group works as a team as far as traffic safety goes. Again, these tours may be unpredictable due to weather or the amount of people interested on any given day. They are a great way to spend your day, though, and it’s worth a check to see if they’re being offered in your area.

Hiking Tours- Once again, not for the weekend warrior, these tours are offered regularly in locations where nature plays a large part in the tourism appeal. In Niagara, regular hiking expeditions include the Niagara Gorge and the Bruce Trail. Both provide the hiker a rare glimpse into the wonderful plant and animal life unique to the area. The amazing geological history is also a large draw. Depending on where you live, hiking tours can focus on any number of special interests. Bird watchers, photographers, botany enthusiasts are all drawn to nature. Fitness adventurers also love these kind of tours. Here, again, weather determines your schedule as safety can be an issue and you will have to know your subject very well. Injuries are more likely to occur on hiking tours than bus tours and so the guide must always be aware of the lurking hazards, be prepared and prepare the group. Poison ivy, unsteady terrains and bug bites are just a few of the potential dangers that need to be avoided. If you love the study of nature and a tour that is physically beneficial, then this might be your perfect fit.

The list of tour guide options is a long one and often area specific. Take the time to explore the possibilities that exist to guides in your hometown so that you can find the genre that is best suited for you. Once you have found your niche, you are on your way to an exciting and rewarding adventure. In my article, ‘Tour Guiding For Beginners’, I delve into a few of the ‘must knows’ that will further assist a novice guide in having a pleasurable tour guiding experience.

postheadericon A Practical Guide on How To Become An International Tour Guide

If you believe you are up to the challenge and want to charge ahead to achieve this great opportunity, one of the best ways to get started is to become a Certified International Tour Guide.  It requires some upfront effort and perseverance on your part before you can expect to reap its rewards, like many independent contractor opportunities.  As an international guide, or even a local guide within your own city, you get to enjoy all or most of the tour events for free!  In addition, you will receive a percentage of the optional tours you sell to the passengers and will receive tips from them at the end of the tour; the amount above the standard tip tour companies recommend to the tourists goes up if you did well.

How to get certified:  Many international and local travel companies either require or strongly prefer a tour guide be certified.  Research the Internet for International Tour Certification programs which are conducted in various U.S. cities and run anywhere from 2 intensive weeks up to 6 weeks or more.  Certification is achieved through classroom study, hands-on practice and successful passing of tests, video and/or on-site demonstration skills.  The programs include how to manage and coordinate the day-to-day travel and accommodation obligations and event opportunities for tour passengers, dealing with international tour agencies and destination representatives, selling optional tours and events, collecting and disseminating tour venue funds, handling all kinds of emergencies, and giving tour talks or presentations while on the road.  However, as an international guide, you will most likely not be the person presenting to the group in a foreign country; expert local guides will be recruited for whichever country you are in.  You will be there to be sure everyone is comfortable and accounted for, to ensure everything and everyone is on time and that the tour follows as advertised as much as possible.  If you do well, the instructor may forward your name to several international tour companies located in the U.S.  This recommendation is gold.  You may even be lucky enough to be contacted by the company when it needs an alternate or last minute director, as happened to me.

If you plan to sign up with international tour companies, first check with your state business registration office on what is required to become established as an Independent Contractor; this is what your status will be.  In most cases, your employment with a company will be on a part-time or casual basis. Your home base will not likely change unless you move to become a fulltime employee of a specific company, so you will be obligated to the state for taxation and business requirements  You will need to request a taxpayer ID# from the state, will be subject to income tax, and required to file a business tax form annually or quarterly. If you bill yourself as an Independent Tour Operator where you guide groups by yourself with no affiliation to any professional registered company, you should apply for ASTA membership – this is the American Society of Travel Agents, a leading advocate for travel professionals which offers a great deal of benefits for its members.

Prepare your cover letter and resume, focusing on your experience as it relates to leading, managing or teaching groups in any capacity, professional or personal travel experience, experience making travel arrangements, especially for others, experience living and/or working in foreign countries, any foreign language ability and anything else that you feel would promote your international tour capabilities.  If you have worked as a local tour guide in your own city, this is important experience to add to your resume.  If a company has a required application, apply and attach your resume and cover letter and be sure to fill out the application completely even though it may repeat what is stated on your resume.  The application will be the main document reviewed by the company.  Do not be lazy about this.

After you have applied to a number of companies (I would recommend at least 10), follow up with the companies after about 2-4 weeks.  Inquire if there are openings, the status of your application and ask if there is a possibility of an interview or how the company selects its tour guides.  Ask them if they can send you any information on their policies and procedures or how they generally like to manage their tours; having this information is very important if you are eventually selected to guide a tour to avoid any missteps on your first assignment.  Don’t be too concerned if they are reluctant to release this information.  Press on regardless.  Try not to get frustrated; this takes patience and perseverance.  Most companies will have a stack of applications and will select prospects when they need a tour guide in a pinch so luck has a lot to do with it.  Keep in contact with them about once a month or every other month to keep your name “afloat”.  Contacting them more frequently than monthly might have a negative effect.

While you are waiting for that special opportunity to strike, continue to add to your experience and occasionally send an updated resume to companies that you are interested in.  If your city has a local guide service, consider joining their network to gain group guiding experience and to build a good reputation among guides and visitors (a good guide will often be requested by returning visitors and/or destination companies and these recommendations are good to add to your international application).   The company may pair you with a seasoned guide and pay you at a lesser rate for work performed assisting the main guide or they may request you volunteer first to gain experience. Many of the local opportunities include short trips such as a city tour or day trips to sites outside of the city, airport meet-and-greet events where you greet incoming tourists belonging to a particular group (e.g., convention attendees, traveling school groups or bus tour tourists), and groups signed up for planned restaurant, local destination, entertainment or shopping events.

On a smaller scale, organize a group outing for your own work colleagues; coordinate the venue date, space and activities and take care of collecting the required fees and payments.   It is small step but even the smallest level of experience can lead to something bigger.  Consider paying for, and joining some local bus or destination tours and observe how the tour guide manages the tour.  Converse with the guide in spare moments; most guides will be happy to share some ideas and information about guiding if they know you are interested in joining the industry.  Build on your experience and be patient; take it step by step.  There is no overnight success!.
